Periodic scaling is part of maintenance, not only something done when the gums start to hurt.
What this service is
How fast tartar forms differs and relates to saliva, brushing, and tooth shape. Regular cleaning reduces hardened plaque before it inflames the gum. It does not replace daily brushing.
When it may be considered
At the interval given at the exam, or when tartar near the gum is seen again. A crown, bridge, or implant is not a reason to skip this visit.
The general process
Plaque and tartar are removed and the surface is polished. If an area under the gum needs more work, a separate appointment is made. Mild sensitivity afterward can occur.
Care and notes
Do not skip brushing that night. If bleeding continues after a few days of careful cleaning, do not wait with mouthwash alone. Tobacco increases both tartar and inflammation.
