All-ceramic crown
An all-ceramic crown is a cap that covers the whole visible surface of a tooth, most often when the walls have become weak.
What this service is
Unlike a veneer, it does not cover only the front. Ceramic can look close to enamel. The tooth underneath has to be prepared so there is room for the crown’s thickness. That preparation is not reversible.
When it may be considered
After a large fracture, root canal treatment, or a big filling that leaves the tooth at risk of cracking. It is not necessarily the first choice for a mild color change on a healthy tooth.
The general process
The tooth is prepared and an impression or scan is taken. A temporary cover is usually placed until the crown is made. At the next visit the bite and color are checked and the crown is bonded.
Care and notes
Do not pull a temporary crown off with sticky food. If it comes off, do not leave the prepared tooth bare. After the final crown is cemented, flossing at the gum edge is still needed.
