Bone graft and sinus lift

A bone graft or sinus lift is considered when the height or volume of bone is not enough to place an implant.

What this service is

A graft adds bone material where the volume is low. A sinus lift concerns the floor of the sinus above the upper back teeth, where the bone is sometimes short. It is not required for every person considering an implant, and it does not replace an examination.

When it may be considered

It is discussed if imaging shows that the remaining bone cannot stabilize a fixture. Untreated sinus inflammation or an oral infection may change the timing of surgery.

The general process

The material, and whether the graft is done with the implant or earlier, is decided after imaging. Healing can take several months, and a fixture or final crown is not placed until the bone has consolidated.

Care and notes

Forceful nose blowing, drinking through a straw, and tobacco are unsuitable in the early period. Mild swelling can occur. Tell the clinic about fever, bleeding that continues, or discharge from one side of the nose.
