Root-related infection
A root-related infection usually spreads from dead tissue inside the tooth into the bone at the root tip.
What this service is
It may show as pain, swelling, a pimple on the gum, or tenderness when biting. The main treatment is removing the source inside the tooth with root canal treatment or retreatment. Medicine alone does not remove that source. In limited cases, draining a swelling or root-end surgery is also discussed.
When it may be considered
Facial swelling, fever, or difficulty opening the mouth needs an earlier review. A painless pimple should still be seen, because a long-standing infection can have few symptoms.
The general process
An exam and often imaging are done. The canal is cleaned and sealed, and swelling is assessed if needed. An antibiotic is the dentist’s decision and is not prescribed for every swelling.
Care and notes
Use compresses and pain relief only as directed, and do not press on the swelling. If swallowing or breathing becomes difficult, come in the same day. After the pain settles, do not leave the canal treatment unfinished.
