Root canal retreatment

Root canal retreatment is for a tooth that was treated before and has pain, swelling, or a sign of infection again.

What this service is

The previous filling material is removed from the canal, and the space is cleaned and sealed again. This is harder than the first treatment, because a canal may be narrow, blocked, or contain a separated instrument. Success is not guaranteed, and surgery at the root end or extraction may also be considered.

When it may be considered

Pain on chewing, a gum pimple, or a new finding on imaging of a previously treated tooth. An existing crown sometimes has to be opened or removed.

The general process

The quality of the previous treatment and the bone around the root are reviewed. The canal is shaped and filled again, and the crown is restored. It may take more than one visit.

Care and notes

Chew on the other side until the crown is sealed. If a crown was removed temporarily, do not lose it or cement it yourself. Report increasing pain in the same week.
