Scaling and polishing

Scaling and polishing remove hardened tartar and plaque from the tooth surface, then smooth that surface.

What this service is

Tartar does not come off with a home toothbrush. An instrument lifts the deposit, and polishing makes the surface smoother so plaque returns more slowly. It is not a cure for bad breath or a way to whiten teeth.

When it may be considered

Yellow or brown deposit near the gum, bleeding, or odor from plaque. The right interval is not the same for everyone and depends on how fast tartar forms.

The general process

It is usually done without cutting the tooth. If deposit under the gum is heavy, a separate visit and local anesthetic may be needed. Teeth can be temporarily more sensitive to cold afterward.

Care and notes

If you are sensitive, limit very cold or acidic food that day. Do not stop brushing because of sensitivity. If the gum is still bleeding heavily after a week, be examined again.
