Tooth extraction

Extraction is considered when keeping the tooth with a filling, root canal treatment, or gum care is not reasonable or not possible.

What this service is

Reasons include extensive breakdown, a fractured root, infection that is not controlled, or a tooth that is harming its neighbors. Extraction is not always decided the same day. A wisdom tooth without symptoms is often monitored rather than removed only because it has erupted.

When it may be considered

Pain and swelling with a tooth that no longer has enough crown to restore, or a specific recommendation after imaging. A tooth loosened by injury may follow a different path from one loosened by gum disease.

The general process

Medical conditions and medicines are asked about. The area is numbed and the tooth is removed. Sterile gauze is placed so a clot can form. Replacing the tooth, if needed, is planned separately.

Care and notes

Hold the gauze with gentle pressure and do not keep spitting, so the clot stays. Tobacco, straws, and hot food are unsuitable that day. Report bleeding that does not stop with ten minutes of pressure, or swelling with fever.
