Wisdom tooth surgery
Wisdom tooth surgery is done when lack of space or impaction is causing pain, infection, or decay.
What this service is
Wisdom teeth erupt later than the others. If one does not come in fully, it can cause infection under the gum, food trapping, or damage to the tooth in front. A tooth that is not causing trouble is usually watched and is not removed only because it is erupting.
When it may be considered
Repeated pain at the back of the jaw, swollen gum over a partly erupted tooth, decay that cannot be restored, or a cyst on imaging. Food catching once is not, by itself, a decision for surgery.
The general process
The root position is seen on imaging. Local anesthetic is usual. Sedation or general anesthesia is discussed only when removal is difficult or the person’s condition calls for it. The gum is sometimes reflected and the tooth removed in pieces. Many people go home the same day.
Care and notes
Mild swelling and bruising can last a few days. Eat soft food, do not rinse the site forcefully, and avoid tobacco so the clot stays. Report prolonged numbness of the lip or tongue, pain that is getting worse, or a lasting bad taste. These problems are not unheard of, and they are not the expected result either.
