Root canal treatment
Root canal treatment is considered when decay or injury has reached the soft tissue inside the tooth and the tooth can still be kept.
What this service is
Inflamed or infected tissue is removed from the canal, the space is cleaned, and it is then filled and sealed. The tooth is not “killed”; the aim is to keep it. After treatment it is often drier and more brittle, and it may need a crown or a covering restoration.
When it may be considered
Lingering pain to cold or heat, night pain, swelling, or darkening after an injury can mean the pulp is involved. Sometimes there is little discomfort and the finding appears only on exam or imaging.
The general process
The area is usually numbed, access to the canal is made, and its length is measured. Cleaning may finish in one visit or several. The crown of the tooth is then restored. The number of visits depends on infection and canal shape.
Care and notes
Until the final restoration, do not chew hard food on that tooth. Mild sensitivity can occur. Increasing swelling, fever, or pain is not treated as routine. Do not stop brushing and flossing.
