Inlay and onlay

Inlays and onlays are indirect restorations made in a laboratory or by digital milling. They sit inside the tooth or over several of its surfaces.

Educational comparison of an intracoronal inlay and a cusp-covering onlay

What this service is

An inlay mostly fills the chewing hollow. An onlay also covers one or more cusps, but it usually does not surround the whole tooth the way a crown does. They may be considered when decay is larger than a simple filling and enough wall remains.

When it may be considered

Replacing a large old filling, or a fracture of part of the chewing surface. If the walls are very thin, a full crown is considered instead.

The general process

Decay is removed, the cavity is shaped, and an impression or scan is taken. The finished piece is bonded at a later visit and the bite is adjusted. A dressing is often placed between the two visits.

Care and notes

Chew on the other side until the bonding visit. If the dressing comes out, food will sit in the cavity and it should be closed sooner. Short sensitivity after bonding can occur.
