Zirconia crown

A zirconia crown is a high-strength ceramic crown, often considered for back teeth.

What this service is

Zirconia is not a metal, but it is stronger than many glass ceramics. It can look uniform, or it can have a ceramic layer over a core. The choice between zirconia and another ceramic depends on the tooth’s position, the neighboring shades, and the space available, not on one fixed rule.

When it may be considered

A back tooth with extensive breakdown, or a place where restorations have broken before. If the only aim is to change the color of a front tooth with as little preparation as possible, another method may be reviewed.

The general process

Preparation and a scan or impression are done. A temporary cover stays until the crown is ready. The edge fit and the height of the bite are then checked.

Care and notes

Grinding can affect the opposing tooth or the crown itself. Come in if you hear a new sound while chewing or if the gum around it stays red. Cleaning the crown edge is the same as for a natural tooth.
