Tooth-colored filling
A composite filling replaces part of the tooth crown that has decayed or broken, in a shade close to the tooth.
What this service is
The material bonds to prepared enamel and dentin and hardens in layers. It is used for many small and medium cavities. On back teeth under heavy chewing, how long it lasts depends on the cavity size, grinding, and cleaning, and it is not permanent.
When it may be considered
A cavity, replacement of an old chipped filling, or closure of a small fracture. If the walls of the tooth are largely gone, a buildup or crown may be needed instead of a simple filling.
The general process
The area is numbed, decay is removed, and the cavity is prepared. Composite is placed, hardened, and the bite is adjusted. It is often finished in the same visit.
Care and notes
Do not chew until the numbness wears off, so the cheek or tongue is not injured. Short sensitivity to cold can occur. If the filling feels high, come back for an adjustment; it will not wear down on its own.
