Repair of a broken tooth

Repairing a broken tooth depends on whether the crack stays in enamel or reaches dentin and the pulp.

What this service is

A small edge fracture is sometimes closed with composite. If a large part of the crown is gone, a buildup and crown are considered. Pain that lingers with heat, or bleeding from the center of the tooth, raises the possibility of nerve involvement, and bonding the edge alone is not enough.

When it may be considered

After a blow, biting something hard, or a broken old filling. If you find the fragment, keep it clean, but it cannot always be bonded back.

The general process

The extent of the crack and whether the tooth is still vital are checked. Then either a direct repair is done or an impression for a crown is taken. A loose tooth, or one with swelling, may follow a different path.

Care and notes

Do not cover a sharp edge with gum or a household material. Until it is repaired, chew soft food on the other side. Report severe sensitivity or swelling sooner.
