Gum problem care

Care for gum problems covers cases that have gone beyond simple inflammation, with recession, pockets, or a loose tooth.

What this service is

More advanced disease can involve the bone that holds the tooth. Signs include gum recession, a lasting odor, teeth shifting, and a change in how the jaws meet. It can also be almost silent and found only on exam. Links with general illness are still being studied and are not presented here as a medical diagnosis.

When it may be considered

Ongoing bleeding, a deep pocket, or new looseness. The plan depends on how deep the involvement is and may include cleaning under the gum, adjusting restorations that trap food, or referral for gum surgery.

The general process

The gum is measured and imaging is done if needed. Tartar under the gum is then removed in one or more visits. The gum’s response is assessed a few weeks later. The result is not the same for every tooth.

Care and notes

Tobacco and poorly controlled blood sugar make healing harder. Clean more carefully each day, not more harshly. Do not push a loose tooth yourself.
