Ceramic veneers

A ceramic veneer is a thin shell made for the front of a tooth, usually considered when the look of the smile is the concern.

What this service is

The shell covers only the front surface and is different from a full crown. It is usually made to coordinate color and shape, and bonding it often means removing some enamel. That step is not reversible.

When it may be considered

It may be discussed for a chipped, discolored, uneven tooth or a small gap. Decay or gum inflammation should be assessed first. Tooth grinding or a severe overlap can limit the choice.

The general process

An exam, and usually an impression or scan, comes first. Enamel is prepared if needed, and the shell is bonded after it is made. The number of visits depends on how many teeth are involved and on the gums.

Care and notes

Fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between the teeth still matter, because the edges around a veneer can decay. Nail biting and very hard foods raise the chance of a chip. Strongly colored drinks are best used with some care.
