Cavity diagnosis
Cavity diagnosis means finding where the damage is and how deep it is, before a decision is based only on pain.
What this service is
Decay may sit in a groove, between teeth, or beside an old restoration. Some lesions are seen by eye and some on imaging. A dark spot is not always an active cavity, and not every sensitivity is decay.
When it may be considered
Floss catching, sensitivity to sweets, or a new spot. Also before a veneer or crown, because covering active decay hides the problem.
The general process
The tooth is dried and examined with light, and imaging is used if needed. The choice is then monitoring, fluoride, or removal and restoration. Not every spot is drilled the same day.
Care and notes
Until the depth is clear, do not put home whitening products on a suspicious tooth. If the pain becomes throbbing, do not delay the exam. Fewer sugary exposures help keep a lesion from growing.
