Core buildup

A core buildup rebuilds the center of the crown with filling material when too little wall remains to hold a crown or an ordinary filling.

What this service is

This is not the final crown. Lost tooth is replaced so there is enough shape for the crown to be prepared and seated. If the root or a root canal treatment is also involved, the order of care is set by the exam.

When it may be considered

After extensive decay, a large fracture, or removal of an old filling that made up much of the crown. A tooth broken below the gum may not be suitable for a buildup.

The general process

Decay is removed and the nerve is checked if needed. The core is then built and shaped. The crown visit may be the same day or later.

Care and notes

Chew on the other side with a new or temporary core. If a dressing falls out, come back soon so the remaining tooth does not break. Do not stop cleaning the gum around it.
