Teeth whitening
Bleaching uses peroxide-based whitening agents to lighten stains inside the enamel.
What this service is
Hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide breaks pigment into smaller particles. It does not change the color of crowns, veneers, composite, or fillings. Yellow teeth usually respond better than brown or gray ones, and discoloration from medicine or injury may not lighten at all.
When it may be considered
It is considered when natural teeth have a general color change and active gum disease or decay is not in the way. A single tooth that darkened after an injury may need a different approach.
The general process
The cause of the color change is checked first. Whitening may be done in the clinic, with a home tray supervised by the dentist, or as a combination. Strength and duration are decided individually.
Care and notes
Short-term sensitivity to cold is common and often temporary. Using more than directed can irritate the gums or enamel. The result is not the same for everyone, and a specific shade should not be expected.
